When I bought my 74 back in 1985 I went to the gas station to fill up and I was alerted by a woman at the pump behind me that I was practically standing in a huge puddle of gas!! Turns out the short hose that connects the outside fill tube to the tube bolted on top of the tank had a split in it. I pushed the car away from the puddle before I started it and changed the hose right away.

Filling the tank with the hose upside down and about half volume also helps.
