Sadly, No it can not! I just did the same on my car. Engine out (and zf), also remove the shifting linkage to zf. I blasted my gas tank and epoxy primed the outer surface. Inside you can buy some sealer made for covering all minor pin holes. Its pretty easy to use. I also used the buttom plug to be the future supply line instead of soaking from the top fitting.
