Reply to "Gas Tank Internals"

A float must not have any liquid inside; this denotes a leak, which will constantly change the gauge readings. I replaced mine using a new float from an early '70s Alfa Romeo. It was identical to the Pantera float, and cheap as I remember. The sock is better removed and discarded. They tend to cake up with varnish, cutting fuel flow and making your fuel pump work that much harder. Instead, use an external fuel filter with a replaceable element, attached between the tank and pump. Hooking a filter the other way causes it to be pressurized which can and has caused engine fires. Its also not legal for open track events, for the same reason. You can also discard the little fuel filter inside your carb's inlet fitting- they plug up rapidly and cause fuel-feed problems. Do NOT use one of those little glass filters, either. They have been known to spontaneously disassemble while the engine is running. Jegs, Summit and other speed shops sell good fuel filters you can trust to stay together.
