Gas vapors

I'm a new owner of a 72 Pantera (Yesterday) I noticed today after I filled her up that when I was driving and slowed down quickly I could detect a strong gas smell. Is that due to the tank being full, or possible there isn't a vent for the tanks? The smell goes away after driving for a while. Are there any other "Issues" with these cars related to the fuel system?
