gear change

i have a mate that has cut the chrome part that guides the gear shifter to make it quicjer and easier to change gear, he is telling me to do the same has anyone else done this is it common practise or what? im always worried about fixing things that arnt broke but it sometimes can be a little tricky to get into gear in a hurry
