Generator light....

I know this is a stupid question, but is the generator light supposed to stay on after the car is started? Mine used to go off, but now it stays on (or fades on and off intermittently). I thought that meant my battery was discharging but it is still fine. I am checking grounds, etc., but just wanted to make sure I know what the "normal" operation is supposed to be.
