Generator Light

On my red 5S car, the generator light is on at all times when driving. It has always been like that since I have had it, and I don't seem to experience any dead battery so I suspect it is working. Is there some way to check if all is ok with the alternator by testing at the batter somehow? I thought there was some test you could do there.
