The generator light is telling you that you have a problem.
Could be a problem with the regulator or with the generator - it may just be a loose generator drive belt.

If it's intermittent it may be working well enough to keep the battery charged - but it will get worse unless you do something about it.

Does your ammeter show a discharge when the light comes on?

What happens if you turn on the headlamps?
