Halfshaft orientation

I am curious why I have seen several pictures of Panteras with the half-shafts orintated differently. My 1973 'L' has the wide sleeves connected to the U-joints that attach to the ZF tranny, with the solid but thinner diameter ends connected to the outer hub carriers. I have however seen pictures of a 1971 car with the shafts reversed (thinner ends towards the ZF)??? Is there a preference? Are these pictures possibly from a earlier prototype, or doesn't it really matter.
