Dan,
The brake lights are not part of the flasher and turn signal circuit.

The yellow/blk and black wires are only for the light inside the flasher switch. You don't need to connect either to make the flasher work. The resistor is just to make the flasher light dim when the lights are on. The flasher light will be bright when the flasher switch is "on".
