Funny you should ask. I just did some measuring and placed an order for 3" actuators here:

I am going with 2 actuators; one each side. I removed the bar with no intention of putting it back up.

I still had it hooked up to the Firebird motors and it was traveling about 3". The key was an adjuster I made to move the bucket:
