headlight upgrade advice sought

My '73 has stock headlights still, and they're inadequate. Has anyone got advice on upgrading? I see halogen replacement lamps, round and costly rectangular. As I don't find the 'bug' look objectionable, is there a functional advantage one over the other? The car has a GT4 spoiler. Any suggestions on additional lights?
