Heater A/C Control Lever Replacement

On my '74 I have a broken hot/cold lever and have the replacement plastic part. It looks like it would just slip/snap onto the end of the flat metal part of the lever if I could get the rest of the old piece out. Has anyone done this without removing the whole lever unit? Can I just break or file off the rest of the plastic piece? Thanks,
