heater control valve assy

I,m still trying to get 4044 back on the road. Looking under the dash, I see that the heater valve has a secondary valve attached before the original??????????? I just looked up the price for an original replacement and now I guess I know why. Is there a viable alternative for the valve or should I just keep what I have. I,m assuming it leaked when shut off requiring the additional valve.
