This guy seems to have a solution ...

This site (search around you may find one with better pricing) - http://secure.transtronics.com/Optivisor.html - sells something called an Optivisor which has a bunch of different magnifications depending on how close you plan to be to your work ... I'm not 50 yet (I'd like to be someday though), but I do find with fiddly close-up work a lot easier with lots of light!
