There is a new post for a red 1972 Pantera for sale on BaT . It is #2943, about forty cars older than mine #2986.
One of the photos for this car shows the metal placard riveted to the engine compartment, shown below, with the VIN stamped on it. It appears to be a white aluminum plate. On the other hand, my car shows the equivalent plate looking very different. See the mostly black plate. Although I've owned my car for over forty years, I've never paid much attention to this plate, nor if other Panteras have the same plate as mine. My engine compartment was never touched, so I'm wondering about the difference.
Did these plates really vary that much?
