In 1988 I installed an alternator from a corvette. I believe it was an SI series. It is physicaly smaller than the original stock unit. You have to redrill the mounting hole to fit the 7/16" bolt and to keep things the same I also redrilled and tapped the adjuster hole to 3/8" NC. A 1" long spacer cut from an early smallblock alternator spacer from the junk yard takes care of the mounting. Once mounted, connect the main power wire to the large stud and run the blue wire that went to the original regulator to the terminal marked "I". This allows the indicator light to work and also allows charging to start without having to rev the engine up. Abandon the rest of the wires that go between the regulator and alternator. Oh, one more thing, the alternator comes with a pully for serpentine belt. Just swap your original pulley on, it is a direct fit.
Good luck as Jack says.
