Intermittent Electrical Weirdness

Strange glitch in my electrical system that has me stumped. I have a conventional (3 wire) alternator, solid state regulator and a new Optima battery. Replaced my amp gauge with a voltmeter and connected the amp gauge terminals. Everything works as it should, except for intermittent non charging of my battery as evidenced by low voltage on the gauge and my gen light illuminating. Hang on, there's more: it only does this after high rpm antics and will return to normal operation after a few minutes of regular driving. It doesn't always do this and there's no discern able pattern other than post red line cut out. Any thoughts?
