I have never given much thought to the two items circled in my photo. I have always drained from the bottom and filled from the side plug.
I’m assuming the fill plug you referenced is the red one in my photo, right?
And what pray tell would the yellow plug be?

Larry, The red circle is around a fill plug that has been added at some time. The yellow is around one of the plugs for the passages ( one on top and three on the side) that allow the shift rail detents to be installed into the rear case section during assembly.
