I had the same problem, and eliminated the valve altogether by installing a remote valve in the engine compartment. There is a potentiometer under the dash that hooks to the control cable. The valve returns water to the block when closed, and loops to the heater when open. You have to extend the wires for the control with some ribbon cable. Found mine on E-bay.
