Reply to "Longchamp fuel tank"

Hi Racheliane,
my 74 Longchamp tanks were plain aluminium when I purchased the car. The only coating was black paint. Both tanks had pin hole corrosion so there was a permanent smell of fuel from the luggage compartment. They had been installed with something like carpet underfelt between the tank and the outer guard. Moisture in this felt had set up a corrosion cell to cause the pinholes.

To fix it I put an aluminium rivet into the largest holes. Then I coated the outside of the tank in an industrial grade clear 2 part epoxy. I also fixed the leaks that allowed moisture inside, and the car has been garaged ever since.

That repair was done more than 25 years ago, and has given no further problem.
