ZFs were merely adapted to not designed for Panteras. The GT40 configuration was the as designed orientation and as JT says, immerses the critical parts in lube. In a street car like a Pantera, the primary reason for flipping the ZF is the engine sits significantly higher in the Pantera chassis compared to the GT40 and it serves for better ground clearance, accommodating driveline geometry, and chassis/suspension packaging.

Mangustas -1ZFs are in the original GT40 orientation and it’s pretty common to see their unique bell housing having been grounded at one time due to their engine height.
