Marking the flywheel/clutch for timing??....

Has anyone just marked the flywheel/clutch assembly for TDC at the inspection window so you can just check for minor adjustments at the back of the car??.... You can see "the spot" moving even w/no mark??... How about the track guys??... anyone??... Is this a dumb idea??...
