Rick's is tried and proven - yours wouldn't be. That isn't to say this is major rocket science and if you have a handle on these types of things, then go for it. Rick uses top notch parts, has them well laid out and instructions make it a snap. If you don't mind tracking your parts down, fabricating your brackets and figuring out your wiring then yup, you could do it yourself.

Just a personal choice thing. Some folks like vanilla ice cream, others prefer chocolate. It's all good.
