All hoses are extra length and quadruple clamped, and both tubes were cleaned and repainted.
The refill went as expected (4 gallons came out) and since the nose was up anyway, I put 3 gallons of mix in until the upper petcock indicated full, then drop/run/open thermostat/shut off/cool off/add a quart/repeat until it was happy/full/cool.
