Thanks guys.
The dimmer goes from near zero ohms to around 5 ohms. The detent position is open. It is a coil rheostat as I understand it so polarity shouldn't matter. I would expect when it is removed that the bulbs wouldn't work at all, (though mine does) is that correct?
