New Cam From Scratch

Hand built from a block of steel using a hand held grinder. It's actually for a 1902 Oldsmobile. I created a computer program to map out existing lift on old cam. I mapped out desired lift. The computer program I wrote was specifically for this. Then I took the lift at specific spots and worked it back and forth with a drawing program.

With the drawing program I drew the cam based on all the dimensions from rocker arm to lifting rollers. When I got done I put the cam on the car and measured it to a dial indicator. I checked the lift every 10 degrees. Lift was dead on at the valve and no 10 degree increment was more then 10/1000's off.

The goal was not just to make a cam but to make it so it was repeatable; all with a hand held grinder, belt sander, sand paper and a dremmel tool for polishing:
