New location for water temp sender

I just got the SS tanks from Hall, very nice and shiny. But the new coolant tank does not have a bung for the water temp sender. Without modifying the tank or a lot of effort, where is the best, and easiest place to locate the sender? Does the sender need direct contact with the water?
