As to whether you'll need the supplied reverse-current diode, you can try it without, and if necessary, kill the engine with simultaneous clutch & brake. One Pantera owner recently had no trouble with his MSD until he turned off his radiator fans- then found the fans turned into a sort of generator so the engine would not shut down. He wound up digging the unused diode out & installing it the next day.
