Hi Jon,
I don't have much experience with the earlier cars, so I can't tell you if the two-color housings are the same as pre-L or L-model cars. Hopefully someone else here is more knowledgeable than I am, and will let both of us know.
There are two bulbs located behind the two-color lens. The inboard bulb is 5 watts, and acts as a running light. This bulb illuminates the clear section of lens anytime the lights are on. The outboard bulb is 21 watts and acts as a turn indicator. This bulb flashes behind the amber section of lens when the turn signal is activated - it does not illuminate at any other time. The photos below show the turn signal on the drivers side.
