Try removing the shaft at the splines at the trans. Find a well fitting object to fit crossways in the hole. rotate it clockwise you should hear a clunk. Push the shaft while rotated and you should hear the gear engage. If this works fine the problem is outside the trans. If it still does not engage its the trans itself.
