Doug,

Rotate the engine slightly by hand while applying slight downward pressure on the distributor. It should go right in.

You could also use a 1/4" drive socket and extension to turn the oil pump shaft. Make sure that you tape the socket to the extension so that they don't come apart and fall into the engine.
