You didn't describe the noise but if it is a high pitched shriek it is the idler bearing. They are just a roller bearing but have no means of getting lubrication. What happens is the get sticky and cause the fan belt to slip as your air conditioner loads it up. They are cheap and you can get them at the parts store. All you have to do is look at your belt to see if it looks like it has gotten real hot.
