When I was a Motorcraft rep 10 years ago we used to cut-up filters for demos. The main differences are really the paper filter lenght inside and the valve.

I have a case of FL-1 HP race filters, won't use anything else. I also run 10w30, really don't need the 5w or 0w viscosity as I don't run my motors in the winter. As to the frequency of oil changes, manufacturers now have service intervals of almost 10,000 miles, so I just change my oil in the spring.
