O2 Sensor

I'm installing an O2 sensor for an air/fuel ratio gauge. I know that most are installed near the header collector. Mine is ceramic coated and I hate to drill and weld ruining the finish. My question is: since the pantera has such a short tail pipe, can I mount the sensor in the tail pipe near the collector? I read that it has to reach a certain minimum temperature to work, will it heat up enough positioned here?
