Oil leak

As some may know, I am bringing a 72 back to life after sleeping since 1990. In looking for the point of origin of an oil spot on the shop floor, it is coming from the area of the engine/bellhousing area. It IS oil, not gearbox lube. I am assuming a rear main seal. Is so, are those the old style rope seal? If so, a) is there a retrofit to a conventional seal, and b) does this require pulling the engine?
