Actually the thinking on the pumps is just the opposite of what you think it is.

You want the high pressure pump for sure, this insures the oil pumped by the pump is delivered to the block and not recirculated. It also prepares the motor for more rpm, the old 10 psi per 1000 rpm rule applies here. (Its a Smokey Yunick rule).

The standard volume pump is preferred unless the clearances in the motor are set "loose". So long as the motor builds 10 psi additional oil pressure for every 1000 rpm increase in motor speed the volume of the pump is adequate.
