Yes, it is a straight shot from the sender to the gauge, but it does pass through the nylon connector that is located above the driver's right side kick panel.

Do you have continuity from the sender to the nylon connector?

The routing is from the sender at the back of the block, along the inboard side of the right valve cover to the wiring loom at the firewall (below the window). That wire loom proceeds along the top of the firewall to the right side of the car, then down past the starter solenoid and into the right side rocker panel, then up along side the fuse panel, then forward and along the cabin's front bulkhead to the steering column area, then towards the gauges, passing through the nylon connector, and from the nylon connector to the gauge.
