I'm not sure where to get pink/black wire, although I seem to recall that someone posted a link to striped wire not too long ago. You could always use pink wire and put a stripe along the wire with a felt marker.

Try your jumper from the sender to the (disconnected) nylon connector, the half that goes to the gauge.
