It would have been great seeing these cars new at the showroom, and looking for these details! My guess is the air intake area was never that nicely finished - the pic is from my cars several years ago, showing the area in question, without the body section covering it. There should be a sheetmetal 'cap' over the heater intake tube to prevent water from going into the heater (this cap part was rusty on 1010 and replaced after the photo was taken). Anyway I would be surprised if Ghia painted this cavity body color prior to the front clip being welded on over this area (spot welds all around) and it must have been impossible to prevent overspray when the body was painted. So my GUESS is that this area never looked that great. Luckily the vent openings are thin so that obstructs the view to this inaccessible cavity area
