You're right about the change in offset due to the brakes. Also, as David explained, once you get beyond 17" diameter wheels the restriction in wheel width and backspace no longer exists.

I've put a lot of effort into updating my post on the first page of sticky #8 in this forum, and from my perspective it explains everything pretty darn well.
