"and how many GTS were made?"

As with most things DeTomaso, it's confusing... With U.S GTS's, the model is built into the serial number- 'THGTS-0xxxx', and the body serial begins with '3'. Early on, there were thought to be only 98 U.S GTS's, all '74s. Until the first Registry found another 40 1973-dated GTS's, apparently part of Ford's redated CA car series George mentioned.
To compound the confusion, all Euro narrow-body cars sold by DeTomaso were refered to as 'GTS' when they were ordered from his factory. Their serials did NOT have 'GTS' in it. You could get a Euro GTS thru about 1988 or so.
In the U.S, this was a decal pkg with the only real extras being a dash clock and useless fender flairs (the original fender lips were not trimmed off for wide tire clearance under the flairs). In Europe, some GTS's were Gr-3 club racers with roll cages, Weber carbs, 10" rear Campys and pumped up engines- from the factory.
