Passenger side engine cover

Just doing some reading and was curious at what serial number(or when) the passenger side engine cover was changed to have an access hole for one of the coolant tanks? I know of 3 fall/winter of 73 builds, 6243,6480,& 6638 (would have been sold as 74's) that have the plain cover. When was the switch? Did the hole help much?
