I liked the X1/9 so much I have owned two of them; a 1978 and a 1981. I thought of them as "metric Panteras"; 150kph vs 150mph, etc.

My only real knock against them was chassis stiffness. I put stiff swaybars on the '81, and if you parked it on uneven ground the doors noticably jammed. If you took the top off and opened both doors, you could see why; the car is only about a foot thick.

The X1/9 is a fun car to drive, and didn't cost much to run, either. He could definitely do worse.

Hmmm.... I'm on my fifth mid-engine car now, if I count the Lola T340.
