Thank you all for your thoughts. It will take me a week and a half to read the Dan Jones bit!
I am going to study what has been written here, consult my Holley book, and figure out what to do.
I took the car out tonight and got about 1/4 of a mile up the road when suddenly it backfired a couple of times on stopped. I had this happen at the end of last year and it turned out to be a coil failure. So now I have to fix an ignition problem before I can start on the carb!

I will let you know how I get on..
