Pod type dash boards

Pod type dashes had 3 defroster vents in 71, where as most,if not all 72 dashes had 2 vents. Was the reduction of vents intended to be a upgrade to provide greater air movement and thus better defrosting/defogging capacity for driver & passenger or was it just a design change?
