I have been chasing down how to get rid of mine! Those pops are lean backfires caused by a air entering the exhaust. Could be because of a leaky gasket. In my case, the intake gasket was torn. For an intact system, it could be due to resonance or coincidence of fuel mixture. If you wanted to induce lean backfire, I suppose you could install a gulp valve in the header tubes somehow to let air in on decel.
