Primer Question for painters

So I was reading in a restoration magazine that one should not use a metal etch primer on vehicles pre-1980...

No real technical reason was given other then HSLA steels were used post-1980. The author did not list any background creds so I am not sure if he is in the paint industry or what. I will ask my local paint shop the next time I go in.

His recommendation was an expozy primer over the bare steeel after it had been sanded with 180 grit.

Thoughts?
