Unless you know for sure that the oil pump drive shaft and retainer is installed correctly I would not remove the distributor. If the shaft is incorrectly installed it will stick to the bottom of the distributer and then fall into the oil pan as you remove the distributer. You should be able to check the advance with timing light.
