On early cars a hose connected this fitting to a nipple in one of the radiator tubes up front. Later cars ran a line from this fitting on the radiator to the swirl tank in the rear. The idea was automatic air purge. It didnt really work. Just leave it plugged off but make sure one side of the radiator has a little valve to vent air from the top of the radiator as you fill the coolant.
